On February 12, 2010, the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education is hosting its annual symposium, “It’s About a Billion Lives: Advances in Tobacco Control – Celebrating Tobacco Research and Education at UCSF.” The symposium will bring together thought leaders from around the country to examine the latest implications of tobacco’s effects on health and policy. The symposium will also include a poster session displaying the breadth of tobacco research at UCSF. NACDD Chronic Disease Academy

The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors presents this unique learning opportunity with ten different skill-based educational programs geared toward the chronic disease workforce and anyone interested in chronic disease prevention and control. Each session, ranging in length from 1 to 1 ½ days, will be an interactive, intense training experience. The course content of all Academy classes are based on the NACDD Competencies for Chronic Disease Practice, and will be delivered in five identified areas/tracks: Build Support; Design and Evaluate Programs; Influence Policies and Systems Change; Lead Strategically; and Manage Programs and Resources. Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco 16th Annual Meeting

The 16th annual meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco will be held on February 24-27, 2010 in Baltimore, Maryland. After an exciting joint conference with SRNT-Europe in 2009, which highlighted the many important achievements in tobacco control research from around the globe, we are eagerly anticipating another exciting scientific meeting that will feature cross-disciplinary research in basic, clinical, epidemiology, public health, and policy sciences. Continuing in the tradition of past meetings, we anticipate cutting edge science, productive conversations with colleagues, the formation of new collaborations, and some well-earned relaxation. SRNT encourages submission of abstracts describing cutting-edge research in nicotine and tobacco. Abstract submissions are being accepted through January 8, 2010. Promising Practices: Achieving Health and Social Equity in Tobacco Control

The next national Break Free Alliance & NAATEN conference will take place April 27-28, 2010 in New Orleans. The Break Free Alliance and the National African American Tobacco Education Network, both programs of the Health Education Council, are hosting this conference as a follow-up to our first successful 2008 conference in Detroit. The conference focuses its efforts on reducing the burden of tobacco use in low socioeconomic status and ethnic minority populations. Our conference tracks for 2010 will focus on a new era in tobacco control: Track A –Integrating Tobacco Control and Chronic Disease Prevention; Track B – Increasing Access to Prevention, Education and Cessation; and Track C – Yes We Can! – Influencing Policy, Legislation and Health Care Reform. APACT 2010 Conference: Asia Pacific Conference on Tobacco or Health

The Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) is pleased to partner with the Asia Pacific Association for the Control of Tobacco (APACT) to bring evidence-based solutions to the tobacco control issues faced by healthcare providers, advocates and others in the Asia/Pacific region. The APACT conference is the premier tobacco control conference for the Asia Pacific, with the 2010 conference focusing on Change, challenge and progress: FCTC in the Asia Pacific. APACT 2010 aims to encourage tobacco control and public health advocates, researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and especially youth leaders, to share experiences and discuss strategies for implementation of the FCTC. Funding assistance is available for delegates from low and middle income countries; click here to download the application form. Seventh World Conference on Nonsmokers’ Rights

The Seventh World Conference on Nonsmokers' Rights is the only antismoking/tobacco control conference devoted exclusively to protecting the rights of nonsmokers. The conference will feature presentations and discussions about new legal and law-related actions used in protecting nonsmokers' rights, and will consider powerful and often overlooked weapons used to protect them. Information will also be provided at the conference on additional funding sources for those looking to further advance nonsmokers' rights both domestically and abroad. This invitation-only conference will be available to law students who submit an innovative 1000 word proposal on the use of legal research and advocacy to further the advancement of nonsmokers' rights. Those who submit their proposals may be invited to Washington, DC on one of 33 $1,000 travel grants in order to compete for the grand prize of $5,000 cash. Click here for more information.
