Request for Applications: Local Tobacco Control Interventions (CA)
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH), California Tobacco Control Program (CTCP) recently released the Request for Applications (RFA) 10-100 for local tobacco control interventions.  The contract term is July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2013.  This RFA will make $5.7 million available each year to fund approximately 38 local tobacco control intervention projects (an individual award will be up to $450,000 for each project for the three-year contract term) which demonstrate the ability to change social norms around tobacco use, reach priority populations, and address other tobacco-related disparities. Request for Proposals: Statewide Youth and Young Adult Advocacy, Training and Technical Assistance (CA)
The California Tobacco Control Program is awarding a single contract to operate and maintain a youth and young adult project to provide tobacco-related advocacy, educational materials and technical assistance (TA) and training. The recipients of these services are California Tobacco Control Program (CTCP) funded agencies (local health departments, community-based organizations, and other statewide training and technical assistance agencies) who operate tobacco control-related projects throughout California. Call for Proposals: Public Health Services and Systems Research
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is pleased to share the release of the Public Health Services and Systems Research 2009 call for proposals. Approximately $2.4 million will be awarded to up to 12 applicants through this solicitation. Awards will fund projects in the priority areas of organization structure and authority, public health finance, public health department performance, quality improvement and accreditation, and evidence-based practice and return on investment. The National Network of Public Health Institutes will serve as the administrative service organization and facilitate this call for proposals. This solicitation seeks to engage new researchers in the field of PHSSR. Practitioners, policy-makers and researchers from law, public policy, business administration, organizational behavior, finance, urban planning, public administration, and industrial and systems engineering are especially encouraged to apply to be principal investigators. Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy dies after cancer battle
Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy died on August 25 after a lengthy battle with brain cancer. Senator Kennedy served as a champion for equal and fair access to healthcare, and played an instrumental role in building support for FDA regulation of tobacco at a time when powerful industry interests dominated. FDA names director of new center for tobacco products
The Food and Drug Administration just announced that Lawrence Deyton has been selected as the Director of the new Center on Tobacco Products. Dr. Deyton's skills and experience render him well qualified to establish this critical new Center and lead it in its mission. The FDA is demonstrating its commitment to moving quickly and vigorously to implement its new authority to regulate tobacco products. FDA seeks public input on tobacco regulation
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is seeking public input on the implementation of its historic new authority overseeing tobacco products in the United States. In a Federal Register notice, the agency invites the public to provide information and share views on a wide range of topics, from product content to advertising and marketing. Comments are being accepted electronically and by mail through September 29. Electronic comments can be submitted here [use the Search Documents option to search the site for FDA–2009–N–0294].
