The Praxis Project Learning Circle Series 2009: Communicating to Advance Racial Justice
January 23-25, 2009

This session, taking place just days after the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, DC, will focus on strategic communications to effectively advance racial justice.   Participants will gain tools to design strategies and develop communications plans that are grounded in their local context and take into account the post-election environment. As one of the Praxis Project’s 2009 Learning Circles, this innovative, collaborative residential retreat is a great opportunity to build your capacity to advance justice on the community level. The training is designed for activists who view advocacy and policymaking as essential tools for improving their communities. Applications are especially encouraged from individuals who organize people to enhance the health, wellbeing and safety of the communities they live in. The deadline to apply is November 7, 2008. Second Annual Symposium on Tobacco Control

The symposium is hosted by the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education (CTCRE) at UCSF. The keynote speaker will be M. Cass Wheeler, CEO of the American Heart Association, and the closing (summary) speaker will be Shaun Coughlin, director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute. Other speakers will include:  Ruth Malone, RN, PhD, FAAN, Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and newly appointed editor of Tobacco Control; Jodi Prochaska, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry; Becky Schane, MD, second year fellow at the CTCRE and board eligible clinical research fellow in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine; and Quan Gan, PhD, first year fellow at the CTCRE. The symposium will also feature a poster session that will represent the spectrum of tobacco research taking place at UCSF. Save the date! More information will follow. 5th National Summit on Smokeless and Spit Tobacco

The 5th National Summit on Smokeless and Spit Tobacco is designed to support health care professionals, public health and policy professionals, tobacco treatment specialists, scientists, physicians, dentists, dental hygienists, state and federal tobacco prevention and control administrators, tobacco program staff and advocates who have an interest in smokeless and spit tobacco. The Summit is the primary forum professionals in the smokeless tobacco field have to come together to learn of best practices, share success stories, hear about prevention and cessation approaches that work, and become aware of the latest research in the field. It also provides these professionals a specific opportunity to network with their colleagues nationally and internationally.
