N.Y.'s cigarette tax climbs to nation's highest (NY)
As of June 3, New York’s cigarette tax has increased by $1.25, raising the total excise tax to $2.75 per pack. This tax hike elevates the retail price of cigarettes to over $10 per pack in some areas of the state. According to the New York health commissioner, this tax increase is expected to prompt 140,000 smokers to quit. Because youths are most strongly affected by price increases on cigarettes, the commissioner projects that the tax will prevent 243,000 youths from smoking. Along with the tax increase, the state has launched an $83 million anti-smoking campaign. Click here for more information.
20 cent cigarette tax hike hits July 1 (VT)
The second tax increase of Vermont’s two-part cigarette tax hike will take effect on July 1. The cigarette tax increased by 60 cents to $1.79 in 2006, and will now rise by 20 cents to total $1.99 per pack. In addition, the state excise tax will increase for several other tobacco products. Tobacco users will be charged an additional 20 cents for packs of twenty little cigars, 25 cents for packs of 25, 66 cents for cans of roll-your-own tobacco, and 17 cents per one-ounce can of snuff. Multiple tobacco tax increases since the 1990s have cut the state’s smoking rate from 25% to 18%, according to the Vermont Department of Health. Click here to find out more.
