Gender differences in smoking and cessation behaviors among young adults after implementation of local comprehensive tobacco control
This study sought to elucidate gender differences in seeking treatment after a population-based effort to distribute Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) was undertaken in New York City.  A decline in smoking among young adults in New York City from 23.8% to 19.8% was seen between 2002 and 2005, but this decline was mainly among females.  Young adult women were more likely than young adult men to enroll in cessation services, although after enrolling, both genders had equal success in following through with NRT use. Firm doling out free cigarettes reprimanded
An Australian marketing company is being reprimanded for targeting both nonsmoking college students who needed quick money and those who were heavily addicted to cigarettes to be cigarette taste testers.  The taste testers were given large monetary incentives and free cigarettes for completing “taste-testing” surveys for market research.  No formal action is being taken against the marketing company, Feedback Plus, but the firm is being closely monitored by the Australian Federal Health Department.  A representative from Feedback Plus declined to disclose the name of the tobacco company involved.  Click here for more information.
