Tobacco industry research and protection of human subjects:  A case study of R. J. Reynolds
A recent study compared tobacco industry documents to the “Common Rule,” a federal law regulating research on human subjects. Research standards used by cigarette manufacturer R.J. Reynolds from the 1985 to 2000 did not give research subjects sufficient protections to be up to the federal research standards of the time. While research funded by federal money is required to follow guidelines on the treatment and protection of human research subjects, private companies are not subject to these regulations. Calls for Change: Demonstrators march to Reynolds American, protesting farmworkers' conditions
Protesters gathered at the Reynolds American headquarters in Winston-Salem, NC to draw attention to the hazardous working conditions that have resulted in deaths among tobacco field workers.  The protesters hoped to gain a meeting with Reynolds American CEO Susan Ivey, but were turned down because neither the farmers nor the workers are directly employed by Reynolds American, according to a statement by a company spokesperson.  Read more about the protest here.

Altria buys cigar maker John Middleton for $2.9 billion
Altria, the umbrella company owning Philip Morris International, has purchased John Middleton from Bradford Holdings in a deal that will be closed by the end of 2007. Revenues from John Middleton, maker of Black and Mild cigars, are expected to reach $360 million this year.  Click here to read about the deal.

Tobacco giants' profits remain golden
Despite worries about contraband cigarette sales cutting into tobacco companies’ profits in Canada, earnings have held steady. Figures from a tobacco industry survey stated that one third of Canadians purchase smuggled contraband cigarettes. Canadian sales figures have held steady for several major tobacco companies in 2007, including Rothmans Inc. and Imperial Tobacco Canada.  Get more information by clicking here.
