Joint Policy Action Steps toward Tobacco Use Prevention and Control

Effect of smoke-free laws on bar value and profits
A recent study investigating the effects of smokefree policies on bar profits and selling prices has demonstrated no adverse effects. Researchers controlled for a variety of economic variables during their investigation and found that bars in areas with smokefree ordinances sold for similar prices as bars in areas with no restrictions on smoking. Bar profits did not differ significantly, either. These results paint a strikingly different picture than the tobacco industry has portrayed of the effects of smoke-free laws on business viability. Click here to access the study abstract, which was published in the American Journal of Public Health.
