R.J. Reynolds wins ruling on Star Scientific patents
The R.J. Reynolds tobacco company has won a patent lawsuit over a formula for reducing carcinogens in tobacco products. U.S. District Court Judge Marvin Garbis determined that Star Scientific, Inc., a maker of low-tobacco products, intentionally deceived the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office when applying for a patent. Tobacco industry “Youth Smoking Prevention” programs to undermine meaningful tobacco control in Latin America
A recent study has analyzed how the tobacco industry utilizes tobacco prevention programs in Latin America. Researchers reviewed tobacco industry documents, media reports and materials provided by public health workers from the early 1990s to the present. They found that tobacco companies typically incorporate youth smoking prevention efforts into their corporate responsibility campaigns or partner with non-profit organizations and education and health ministries. Imperial agrees to acquire Altadis SA for $17 billion
Imperial Tobacco has agreed to purchase Altadis SA, a Madrid-based tobacco company, for 12.6 billion euros ($17 billion). This acquisition would give Imperial a larger market in Spain, France and Russia, in particular due to their Montecristo brand of cigars. Click here to read more.

Philip Morris Philippines to invest $20 million in Subic warehouse
Phillip Morris will spend $20 million to renovate a warehouse in Subic Bay, located north of Manila. The warehouse will serve as a transitional hub for tobacco leaf shipment in Asia and will be used for two years, until the company builds a permanent location in either the Philippines or Singapore.
