Special reports: State tobacco settlement
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, American Heart Association, American Lung Association and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network have released a report to show which states are doing their part in funding tobacco prevention programs with tobacco settlement money. Only three states are currently meeting the CDC’s recommendations for tobacco prevention program funding; although states are collecting a record amount of settlement money this year, less than 3% of the funds are going toward tobacco-related programs. The report includes an interactive map with summaries on individual states’ spending. View the report here.
Current cigarette excise tax rates
As of October 2007, the current average state cigarette tax was $1.073 per pack, with New Jersey topping the list at a $2.575, and South Carolina at the bottom at seven cents per pack. To see where each state stands, click here. Maryland has increased its state tax by one dollar since this report, and the report is sure to change in 2008, as other states continue to increase their cigarette taxes.
