Racial/Ethnic disparities in report of physician-provided
smoking cessation advice
A new study released in the American Journal
of Public Health revealed than Hispanics, when compared
with non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic White, and other non-Hispanic
respondents, were less likely to receive advice surrounding
smoking cessation. Overall, the analysis of data from the
2000 National Health Interview Survey showed that 16 million
smokers in the U.S. did not recall receiving smoking cessation
advice from a physician in the past year. Click here for

New study shows majority of gamblers are non-smokers
A new study by the University of Nevada at Reno shows
that approximately four out of five gamblers in Nevada are
non-smokers. The results suggest that the economic impact
of smoking bans throughout the U.S. may not be a great as
originally believed. Many states have recently brought attention
this issue, including Nevada and Colorado where smoking bans
exempt gaming establishments and in Atlantic City, where
a proposed ordinance would ban smoking in casinos. Overall,
the study brings criticism against the gaming industry claims
that upward to 70 percent of gamblers are smokers. Click here to

cigarette smoking and heavy drinking among members of a

tobacco. The study sampled over 210 lesbians and 331 gay
men and compared them with similarly aged heterosexual men
and women. Significantly greater rates of smoking were found
even after controlling for age, race/ethnicity, education,
and survey year. Click here for

Racial/Ethnic differences among youths in cigarette
smoking and susceptibility to start smoking

of smoking and the susceptibility to start smoking. Overall,
smoking prevalence was 12.3 %, with the highest smoking prevalence
among American Indian/Alaskan Natives (23.1%). A wide range

Washington Puyallup Tribe changes clinical practices,
reduces number of smokers
A five-year effort to change tobacco cessation practices at the Puyallup Tribal
Health Authority in Tacoma, Washington has resulted in more than 1,200 people
quitting smoking. The Health Authority has also seen a 60 percent decline in
visits for upper respiratory infections, asthma, and coughs – three smoking-related
health problems. The declines can be tracked to the integration of the Public
Health Service “Clinical
Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence” into standard clinical
practice in all four clinics: medical, dental, mental health, and pediatric.
