Florida:
Lori Westphal joins Florida Tobacco Prevention Program
Lori Westphal, Ph.D., MPH has joined the Florida Tobacco Prevention
Program as the Program’s Evaluator. Dr. Westphal has
a master's degree in public health and a doctorate in sociology.
Her responsibilities include the evaluation of objectives
and activities of the tobacco prevention program, oversight
of the Adult Tobacco Survey implementation and data analysis,
evaluation of the statewide telephone Quitline, and serving
as a liaison to other department programs that may require
tobacco-related assistance on policy issues relating to tobacco
use prevention and control. Dr. Westphal worked at CDC as
a Research Fellow under the supervision of Dr. David Hopkins.
She participated as a chapter development team member to review
and evaluate the evidence of effectiveness (e.g. study design,
research methods, and outcome measures) for population-based
interventions as the basis for making recommendations for
community action, systematic reviews for youth tobacco use
prevention and cessation, as well as HIV/AIDS partner notification.
Illinois:
Illinois welcomes new program manager Judith Miller
Effective October 17, 2005, Judith K. Miller, MA, has accepted
the Tobacco Manager position with the Illinois Department
of Public Health. Ms. Miller received her Master's degree
in Social Work from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and
received her Bachelor's degree in Social Work/Psychology from
MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois. She has experience
with legislation, grant writing and program development.
New Jersey:
Two new staff members join the New Jersey Comprehensive
Tobacco Control Program
The New Jersey Comprehensive Tobacco Control Program would
like to welcome Laura Hernandez-Paine, new Director for CTCP
at the New Jersey State Department of Health and Senior Services,
and Uta Vorbach, new Manager for CTCP Research & Evaluation
Unit.
New York:
In Memoriam – Craig Ryder, Associate Director
of New York's Tobacco Control Program
Craig Ryder, Associate Director of New York's Tobacco Control
Program, died on Monday, September 26, at the age of 37, after
a long struggle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Heather,
and two daughters, Laura and Allison, ages 6 and 3. Craig
joined New York's program after seven years with the Massachusetts
Tobacco Control Program. With his commitment, dedication,
professionalism, attention to detail, and extensive knowledge
of tobacco control, Craig used tenacity and team work to build
and sustain two exceptional tobacco control programs. His
loss is a devastating blow to tobacco control.
Washington:
Julie Pyatt rejoins Washington Tobacco Program
Public health veteran Julie Pyatt has rejoined the Washington
State Department of Health’s Tobacco Prevention and
Control Program as policy/enforcement coordinator focusing
on secondhand smoke and youth access policies. Julie has a
master’s degree in public health with an emphasis in
health law. Most recently she was health communications specialist
with Tacoma/Pierce County Health Department. Prior to that
she worked with the Tobacco Program coordinating the American
Legacy Foundation youth empowerment project.
“We’re pleased to again have Julie’s expertise
on our team,” said Terry Reid, Tobacco Program manager.
“Secondhand smoke and youth access are important parts
of our comprehensive effort to reduce the impact of tobacco
use on Washington residents, and Julie will bring renewed
vigor to those areas.”
