Connecticut’s Annual Tobacco Control Meeting: Building a Tobacco Free Future

A two day statewide conference entitled ’Building A Tobacco Free Future’ will be held on November 3rd and 4th, 2005 at the Glastonbury Colonnade Banquet and Conference Center. 11th ANNUAL DUKE NICOTINE CONFERENCE
November 10, 2005; Durham, North Carolina

The purpose of this conference is to bring together leading experts on the genetic mechanisms underlying nicotine and tobacco addiction, to discuss the latest findings relevant to the issues of pathophysiology and treatment. Researchers using molecular methods of analysis and animal models (e.g. genetic knockouts), and researchers studying the relationship between genotype and treatment outcome in human smokers, will present their latest findings and concepts. The formal talks and roundtable discussions will foster a greater understanding of the role of genetic mechanisms in nicotine/tobacco addiction and treatment, and will help identify important gaps in current knowledge so that we can better develop more effective treatments for tobacco addiction. Society for Public Health Education 56th Annual Meeting: Global Health Promotion: Bridging New Worlds and New Cultures

Sustainability Workshops
January 2006; Albuquerque, NM and Atlanta, GA

TTAC is offering a two-day sustainability workshop where participants will learn hands-on the “how to” for achieving sustainability, such as

  1. building and strengthening an organization’s core to achieve its mission
  2. positioning an organization and its activities strategically to be fundable and funded
  3. identifying appropriate and desired funding sources
  4. writing proposals and engaging in activities to secure both immediate and long term funding
  5. developing and maintaining relationships with funders

This workshop takes participants beyond just knowing the players and moves them toward designing an effective strategy to achieve their goal—continued funding to promote community health and quality of life. The training is appropriate for any public health-related or community-based organization.

STEP UP to Sustain Tobacco Control and Prevention through Education and Research
January 30-31, 2006; Nashville, TN

The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) and The American Legacy Foundation (Legacy) are sponsoring this workshop, which will explore methods to promote and sustain the development of education in tobacco control and to enhance participation in tobacco studies, and research among graduate public health students and professionals.
 
The two day workshop will provide a forum for faculty at the member schools of public health (SPH), ASPH-member programs, and vested partners to:

  • share information about the results of STEP UP grantees in curricular innovation and research activities;
  • support sustainable tobacco-related curricula and research in all SPH, with a special emphasis on best practices in academic-practice partnerships; and,
  • evaluate best approaches to integrate tobacco-related public health education and research with other chronic disease conditions.

2006 National Health Policy Conference
February 6-7, 2006; Washington, DC

This year's agenda will provide an in-depth look at critical health issues, as well as provide a health policy scan for the year ahead. Federal & State policymakers, policy researchers and analysts, health industry executives, clinical decision makers, research funders, and health services researchers will be in attendance. The Conference will be followed by an adjunct meeting on February 7-9, 2006, “Public Health Systems Research: Creating the Evidence for Policy,” sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Participants will share their experiences as producers, users, and funders of public health systems research and participate in the development of strategies to build and advance public health systems research agendas. 12th Annual Meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco
Abstract Submission Deadline September 16, 2005
February 15-18, 2006; Orlando, Florida

The SRNT Annual Meeting is a four-day event that provides attendees with an opportunity to exchange knowledge regarding research in the field of nicotine and tobacco use among healthcare professionals specializing in this field. The meeting program seeks to provide the healthcare professional with the knowledge regarding the most recent trends and research in the field of nicotine and tobacco use. SRNT encourages submission of abstracts describing cutting-edge research in nicotine and tobacco. Abstracts should summarize empirical research findings that have not been published or presented elsewhere before the meeting. The Society invites submissions for organized symposia as well as individual paper and poster presentations. All abstracts will be evaluated on the basis of scientific merit by peer review. Additionally, preference for symposia will be given to those submissions that address a substantive issue by integrating across two or more different areas of SRNT research (e.g., pre-clinical, clinical, and public health/policy). The SRNT Program Committee will make decisions regarding acceptance of submissions and notify corresponding authors in December 2005. Society for Public Health Education 2006 Health Education Advocacy Summit
March 11 – 13, 2006; Washington, D.C.

The National Health Education Advocacy Summit and Congressional Briefings comprise two to three day meetings during which participants receive either basic or advanced-level advocacy training, briefings on specific legislative issues by experienced professionals from the government relations staffs of key public health organizations, and arrange and conduct visits—either individually or in state delegations—with members of Congressional representatives or other Federal officials in Washington, DC. The specific legislative issues on which the advocacy summit focuses varies from year to year and are selected by the summit planning committee in advance of each year’s summit. Specific issues have included appropriations for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including preventive health and health services block grants, tobacco prevention and control legislation, and school health programs. Preventing Youth Access to Tobacco Conference
April 12-14, 2006; Seattle, WA

Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center Conferences
May 15-19, 2006, October 17-20, 2006; Rochester, NY

The Nicotine Dependence Center conducts educational activities oriented toward healthcare professionals who are interested in incorporating nicotine dependence treatment into their practice and/or developing a service to meet the needs of tobacco dependent patients. Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dentists, psychologists, chemical dependency counselors, respiratory therapists, nurses, social workers, and other allied health professionals will find these offerings of interest. The conference includes nicotine dependence counselor training and instructions on program development, with speakers drawn from the research and clinical staff, Mayo support services, and internationally known experts in the field. 24th National Conference on Health Promotion and Health: Advancing the National Health Promotion and Health Education Agenda Through Effective Policies and Practices
May 23-26, 2006; Washington, D.C.

Conference themes include: Developing a Competent Workforce, Innovative Approaches to Health Education and Health Promotion Practice, Collaborating with non traditional partners, Economics of Health Education and Health Promotion, Role of Health Education/Promotion in Public Health Legislation and Policy. 2006 International Cancer and Tobacco Control Conferences
