Cessation
National
The Lung Health Study, a randomized, controlled clinical trial
with 5900 participants, demonstrated that cessation programs
can decrease smoking and increase survival rates. The randomized
case group participated in an intense 10-week smoking cessation
program with nicotine gum and behavior modification followed
by a five year maintenance program. After five years, 22 percent
had maintained their nonsmoker status compared with 5 percent
of the control group. Quitters had half the overall death
rate of smokers, one-third the death rate due to cardiovascular
disease and half the lung cancer death rate. The study is
sponsored by the division of Lung Disease of the National
Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. More details about the study
can be found at:

A review by CDC of studies done over the past 20 years at
colleges has found that targeted interventions on university
campuses can have a significant impact on the smoking behavior
of 18-24 year olds. Examples of possible interventions to
combat tobacco industry targeting of this age group and promote
cessation include smoking bans in dormitories, smoke-free
zones, anti-smoking advertisements, and cessation programs
involving coaches, advisors and health centers. The results
are published in the February issue of The American Journal
of Preventative Medicine. For more information, visit:

New Jersey
Two New Jersey doctors launched a smoking cessation program
entitled “Quit 2 Win,” which incorporates existing
programs and resources, schools, physicians and social support
for smokers who wish to quit. Additionally, the campaign offers
a limited number of coupons discounting nicotine replacement
products at CVS pharmacies and through SmithGlaxoKline pharmaceutical
company. Their website, www.njquit2win.com
also provides links to state quit lines and NJ Quitnet where
smokers can access information on cessation strategies, and
individual/group counseling available in their area.
