Media campaigns on
smoking and SIDS – 6/1/06
Q: Has your state used the Towards No Tobacco
Use (TNT) curriculum, and if so, who did you use to carry out
the program? (For more information on TNT, click here.)
A:
- Alabama - Yes, in one community and the
department contracted through a grant with a Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Agency. We also contracted for Life Skills
Training, Project Northland, Not OnTobacco, and Teens Against
Tobacco Use. It has been my experience that fidelity to
the program is better and more consistent if tobacco prevention
programs are contracted out as to getting school administrators
and teachers to incorporate a tobacco prevention program
into their course of study.
- Arizona - In Arizona, we have nine of
our fifteen county program coordinators using TNT curriculum
in their schools. We target middle school youth in medium/high
risk schools. I would say about 3 of the counties provide
it in a capacity building model with teachers or a subcontractor
providing the intervention with the other six utilizing
their own staff to go and provide direct services in the
classroom.
- California - 16 districts use the Project
Toward No Tobacco (TNT) at the K-6 grade level; 18 districts
use the Project TNT at the 7-8 grade level; 6 districts
use the Project TNT at the 9-12 grade level; 27 districts
total used the Project TNT, so obviously some districts
used it at more than one grade level. The report does not
indicate who conducts the TNT, and we haven't located any
other data collection that captures that information.
- Louisiana - DOH used to do TNT at summer
trainings for teachers to implement in fall, haven't for
several years (5 or so). However, the LA Campaign for Tobacco
Free Living has TNT as one of the 3 curricula that their
mini-grantees can use with grant funds. Questions about
this can be directed to Ashley Ross, Executive Director,
LA Campaign for Tobacco Free Living, (504) 301-9803, aross@lphi.org.
- North Dakota - North Dakota has used
TNT fairly extensively. In most schools we have the teachers
carrying it out. We do have a few schools that have used
special school coordinators to teach it - these coordinators
are often funded with the MSA funds we provide to our local
agencies.
- Utah – In Utah we do not have a
standard way of teaching Towards No Tobacco but a variety
of students receive this curriculum from a few different
sources. In the past most of our local health departments
staff were heavily involved in providing this instruction.
And some still do provide this to classrooms in their areas.
Although several years ago when programs changed their focus
to policy we also changed our recommendations on how to
teach TNT. We now heavily encourage training teachers who
then can teach their own students. Another avenue to teach
these students is through the tobacco prevention specialist
we currently fund in a limited number of our school districts.
Although again one of their main roles is to help coordinate
teacher training sessions so that teachers are able to provide
that to their own students over time.
- Washington – In Washington State
we do have TNT as one of the curriculums that can be used
in the comprehensive school based programs. It is typically
conducted by a teacher or prevention interventionist that
is school based. That being said, currently we don't have
any school districts using it. If they have any questions
they are welcome to contact me at carla.huyck@doh.wa.gov.
- West Virginia - West Virginia does not
utilize the TNT program, but does recommend that the Not-On-Tobacco
program be utilized.
