Educational materials on SHS exposure of children and infants – 10/14/05

Q: If you have developed educational materials (brochures and pamphlets) on SHS exposure of children and infants, please let me know. One of your peers is launching a SHS media campaign in January and would like to stock their Clearinghouse with related materials.

A:

  1. California: The Tobacco Education Clearinghouse of CA (TECC) catalogue contains:

    • Give Us a Fighting Chance poster (has a photo of kids framed with names of illnesses that are caused or worsened by secondhand smoke) Smoke-free Parks information kit and brochure (how smoke-free parks protect children and the environment)

    • Protect Your Family--Secondhand Smoke brochure (discusses dangers to children, the elderly, and the family)

    • Please Don't Smoke Around Me video (how to reduce a child's exposure to secondhand smoke, 7 minutes)

    • Fresh Air for Little Noses curriculum and video (includes lessons on the impact of secondhand smoke on children, video is 12 minutes)

    • Healthy Moms, Healthy Kids brochure (encourages pregnant women to give up smoking, bilingual English/Spanish)

    • You Are Not the Only One Who Will Breathe Easier brochure (harmful effects of secondhand smoke on pregnant women and babies; English or Spanish)

    • My Father Protects Me brochure (told from a daughter's point of view; English or Khmer)

    • Your Baby Deserves Better poster (consequences of smoking during pregnancy)

Please note that some of the materials above will include the toll-free number for the California Smokers' Helpline.

  2. Florida: We have developed a brochure that has not yet been printed. When printing is complete, we will be unable to provide enough brochures to stock the clearinghouse due to funding. However, if there is an entity with funds to help with printing, will be happy to supply the brochure. If interested, contact Sonja Bradwell at Sonja_Bradwell@doh.state.fl.us.

  3. Hawaii: Our community coalition on Kauai created a SHS-focused coloring book for preschool children that has been well accepted by teachers and families. If you would like to request a copy, please contact Lila Johnson at lila.johnson@doh.hawaii.gov.

  4. Michigan: Contact Mikelle Robinson at RobinsonMik@michigan.gov for a copy of their brochure on smoking around children.

Ohio: Contact Tracy Clopton Tracy.Clopton@odh.ohio.gov at for a copy of their materials.

North Carolina: You can find North Carolina's print and small media campaign (SHS -- emphasis on kids) at this link:
