College Student Smoking Rates following Policy Implementation - 8/17/07
Q: Ohio is interested in knowing if states that have passed comprehensive clean indoor air laws have data on smoking rates by college students before and after the implementation of the law. Was there a decrease in smoking because they could no longer smoke in bars? We'd also be interested in any specific data on college smoking rates at schools where smoking is no permitted in dorms as well as in bars.
A:
- Alabama – Alabama does not have a strong state CIA law and no data to share on college age smoking rate reductions as a result.
- Arkansas – Arkansas has some preliminary data on colleges visited during the Oxygen Project. Questions are from the College Tobacco Survey that was adapted from the Adult Tobacco Survey. As far as smoking rates of colleges, we do not have that information. We only have smoking behavior, knowledge and attitude information from students, faculty and staff that participated in the survey and not every one participated.
- Indiana – Indiana does not have any state specific data on college student smoking rates. However, we have conducted informal surveys of Indiana colleges and universities regarding their smoking policies and cessation services:
- West Virginia - West Virginia does not have this type of pre- and/or post data on college/university smoking bans.
