Media campaigns on smoking and SIDS – 6/1/06

Q: Has your state done a media campaign (e.g. billboards, TV ads, PSAs, etc.) on smoking as a risk factor for SIDS? If so, please share information and/or materials.

A:

  1. California - California Dept of Health Services produced an ad called 'Baby Blocks' that shows a baby being exposed to secondhand smoke, and the baby spells out 3 health consequences with lettered blocks, one of which is sudden infant death syndrome. The ad is included in CDC's Media Campaign Resource Center. Two other ads came up when I searched the Online Database for 'SIDS'.

  2. Illinois - Illinois has not done a specific campaign on SIDS and smoking, but one of our grantees, SIDS of Illinois has info on their website.

  3. Minnesota - MPAAT has a television commercial from a few years ago that is about secondhand smoke and SIDS. It is called "Infant" and is available through the CDC Media Campaign Resource Center. Here is a direct link to the spot. This spot is very powerful and emotional. We receive many calls when this ad runs.

  4. Wyoming - see attached ad.
