Survey questions to gauge public support of price increases – 12/6/05

Q: Do you know of any source of potential questions that we can review to ask on our ATS to determine the public's support for increasing the cost of tobacco products to help reduce smoking (youth or in general). We want to see if there are other survey questions besides those in the CDC question bank.

A:

  1. Arizona: The questions did not ask specifically about support for the ordinance. TEPP staff felt it was too direct a question, and it was dropped. The specific questions are listed below.

Possible responses for all questions below are:
       1. Allowed in ALL areas
       2. Allowed in SOME areas
       3. NOT allowed at all

       7. Don't know
       9. Refused

Q43. In indoor shopping malls, do you think that smoking should be allowed in all areas, some areas, or not allowed at all?

Q44. How about public buildings, such as: public libraries, city hall and other government buildings? Do you think smoking should be allowed in all areas, some areas, or not at all?

  2. Colorado: Our coalition hired a polling firm to assess support. I don't have the questions but could direct the person requesting accordingly. Contact Karen DeLeeuw.

  3. North Dakota: I know that Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids has questions that they use for polling the public on level of support for increasing taxes.

  4. West Virginia: Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids often does opinion polls of registered voters and they have standard language on their surveys. Contact CTFK and talk to Danny McGoldrick, (202)296-5469, ext 3009.
