Expansion of Smoke-Free
Legislation to Include Bars – 11/10/05
Q: One of your peers is developing a media
campaign focused on expanding the state’s smoke-free
law to include bars. Please send any ads you have developed
focused on bars that you are willing to share. In addition,
please advise of any costs associated with the right to use
the ads.
A:
- Minnesota: The Minnesota Partnership
for Action Against Tobacco (MPAAT) developed ads for Hennepin
County that included bars. And, Clean Air Minneapolis developed
ads with the Minneapolis Convention & Visitors Center
for Minneapolis bars.
MPAAT has been renamed ClearWay Minnesota;
their website is: www.clearwaymn.org.

- Missouri: Attached is an ad we didn’t
develop, but it is one that impressed me enough to save
it in my files. I'm sure the people at www.healthunit.on.ca
would be very open to sharing information about costs, right
to use, etc.
- Rhode Island: On this website
we have posted several ads. The Bartender
ad is from California (available at CDC MCRC) not sure
about the talent fees etc. However, California gave me permission
to do a voice over of the Bartender ad so it fit our needs
before the smokefree workplace law passed in RI. We used
it again after the law passed with some modifications. This
ad was so effective that we heard from our legislators and
at one point thought they would make us take it off the
air because it was considered borderline lobbying. That
did not happen. The Bartender and Waitress ads work.
The Clear the Air ad put a lot of political pressure on
our decision makers (it has a regional focus) but the concept
worked extremely well. RI won the New England Society for
Healthcare Communications Lamplighter Award of Excellence
for both the tv and radio ads.
