Funds for worksite smoking shelters – 8/30/05

Q: Have you ever heard of a company receiving funds to build outside shelters for smokers, to help enforce a smoke free worksite policy? A blue collar company we are working with wants to support its workers when their worksite becomes totally smoke free (even if workers are not ready to quit now) and wanted to know if there was a funding stream for this strategy, or if any company has received money for this strategy in the past?

A:

  1. New Hampshire: No, however the DHHS "purchased" the smoke house at below market rates because the prison detainees built it.

  2. Rhode Island: No companies have received money. However, there is a company that wanted to seal enclosed shelters for smoking employees outside. Our law was interpreted to mean that any enclosed structure would constitute a workplace where smoking would be prohibited.

  3. West Virginia: We HAVE NOT heard of a company receiving funds to build outside shelters. There was a bill introduced a years ago in WV Legislature (that thankfully never was considered in its originating committee!) requiring any business that was declared smoke-free being 'required' to build smokers a shelter.
