Creative ideas for
promoting a new quitline – 6/23/05
Q:
Do you have any creative ideas for kicking
off a quitline? We just changed vendors and want to have some
event to announce the change.
A:
- Oklahoma: hold a press conference featuring
state officials who support the effort, i.e. governor, state
treasurer, DA. When we did, we saw over 2000 hits to the
Helpline the next day!
- South Carolina: When SC had its 1st "kick
off" event to promote the current quitline service,
we staged a press conference as part of a statewide meeting
that Carolina Medical Review of SC-the Quality Improvement
Organization had with all acute care hospitals in the state.
This proved to be very successful. First, because we had
a group of healthcare provders who would be the most interested
in the quitline launch and, second, this assured us of having
an audience to fill the room for the cameras. We also staged
a "1st call" to the quitline by having a current
smoker who wanted to quit to make the 1st call. This made
the event more newsworthy and interesting to the press.
