Resources and activities
for military personnel – 8/1/06
Q: a) Does your state currently fund activities
or work with any military bases/military population?
b) Do you have any information, resources or materials regarding
working with military bases?
c) What activities have been successful? What activities have
not been successful? Lessons learned?
A:
- Alabama - Alabama hasn't worked with
military bases, but I look forward to seeing what everyone
else is doing because we probably SHOULD be!
- California - In California, we have
recently funded a project, (Project UNIFORM [Undo Nicotine
Influence From our Respected Military]). They are working
towards building relationships with local and statewide
military organizations/personnel to increase the awareness
of our California Smokers' Helpline (1-800-No-Butts) to
active military personnel at military installations. Project
UNIFORM will also be coordinating with military support
networks and health advocates to promote smoke-free indoor
and outdoor housing areas.
The prevalence data that we have used for active military
in California was obtained through a "California Active
Duty Tobacco Use Survey." The report can be downloaded
from http://www.tcspartners.org/specstudsummit.html
We anticipate that we will have some good information to
share at the end of the project (June 2008).
- Kansas - Kansas, also, is looking for
strategies. We have identified this as a priority, but aren't
sure what the issues are.
- Michigan - We're not focusing on military
personnel currently, but are interested in hearing from
those that have been.
- Nebraska – Currently we aren't
doing any specific work targeting military bases.
- New Hampshire - NH does not.
- Ohio - We have just finished a CDC Supplemental
Grant which allowed us to collect some preliminary focus
group data on 13 communities. We have not made this "public"
yet because we are working with a marketing contractor,
but if someone may benefit now, we are sharing.
- West Virginia – a) West Virginia
has no full-time 'manned' military bases. However, DTP has
worked with a few of our National Guard posts in various
ways. Also, we have just begun allowing all active and reserve
military personnel utilize our statewide tobacco quit line
services free-of-charge.
b) We did not develop specific materials or resources re:
military activities.
c) No real evaluation on prior activities, and it's too
soon to tell if recently instituted quit line services will
be utilized & successful.
