TV ads or programs for the deaf community – 1/4/07

Q: a.) Have there been any tobacco-specific TV spots for the Deaf Community for youth or/and adults?  Our state agency partner has a grantee from the Deaf Community and they were wondering if there were any tobacco-specific TV spots (for any tobacco topic) for this community.

b.) Are there any tobacco-specific programs (any kind) for the Deaf community that our state can be aware of?

A:

  1. California:
California has not produced any television ads specifically for the deaf. Although we haven't produced separate ads for the deaf, all ads we've produced in either English or in Spanish are closed captioned before airing for maximum reach into the deaf community.  We also provided services at the California Smoker's Helpline via a TDD/TTY line.

  2. New Mexico:
The New Mexico Tobacco Use Prevention and Control program contracted with a provider, the New Mexico Governor's Commission on Disability, to adapt Life Skills Training curriculum to make it accessible and culturally competent for deaf teachers and youth.  Contact information: NM Governors Commission on Disability, Mary Beresford.

  3. Oregon:
a.) There is one particular video targeting deaf and hard of hearing community on tobacco. The following contact information is:

Michigan Association for Deaf and Hard of Hearing
    Website: http://www2.matrix.msu.edu/~madhh-j/
    Phone: 800-YOUR-EAR
Don’t Get Me Started: Tobacco and You Video (sign language, voicing with open captions) - Developed for middle and high school Deaf and hard of hearing students and their classmates. Exercises, handouts and evaluation included.

b.) There are several mental health programs for the deaf and hard of hearing across the nation. It may be likely that they include smoking cessation/tobacco program. Some specific programs or grants for the deaf and hard of hearing population include:
