Tobacco Control Orientation Materials for Advisory/Oversight Committee – 9/12/07
Q: During the 2007 Mississippi Legislative Session, a bill was passed creating the Office of Tobacco Control within the MS State Department of Health. In addition, the bill mandated that a 13-member advisory committee be established to advise the State Board of Health on the tobacco control program. The advisory committee will hold its initial meeting in the coming weeks, and the members will need to be oriented on tobacco control (history, data, etc.). Can anyone share examples of materials used when orienting members of an advisory/oversight committee?
A:
- Arkansas: The attached slides were created for Arkansas’s advisory committee:
- California: California found TTAC’s primer on Tobacco Control a really good resource.
- Oklahoma: To help introduce the members to the scope of the science in the field, provide them with copies, or at least the executive summaries, of most of the sentinel documents in tobacco control to include relevant SGR reports, PHS Guidelines, the 2007 IOM report, the Guide to Community Preventive Services, etc.
- Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium: TTAC has an excellent Tobacco 101 training available on the TTAC website. It includes a trainer's guide on the basics of tobacco control that you or your staff can use to deliver the training.

- Vermont: Vermont has a similar set-up. Mississippi can view the Vermont Tobacco Evaluation and Review Board website. There should be information there about the Board's duties and organization.
- West Virginia: West Virginia does not have an advisory committee; however, a few suggested documents include:
