Advertising Agencies for Anti-Tobacco Campaigns and Collateral Material – 9/18/07
Q: The Louisiana Tobacco Control Program is integrating some of its programs with the Louisiana Public Health Institute - Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living.
A.) We are searching for one or a few advertising agencies that are successful in tobacco campaigns. Our needs include Cessation Campaigns, Secondhand Smoke Campaigns, Workforce Campaigns, Fax Referral Programs, Youth Campaigns and Disparities. We really need ad agency suggestions that have been successful in other states. It is such a specialized market segment to tap all the needs for each specific campaign and to generate results that reach all identified audiences including businesses and citizens. Please forward any of your recommendations.
B.) If you have any program collateral material (print, brochures, radio, etc.), focus group information, anything you could forward to us would be greatly appreciated.
A:
- Alabama: Alabama had great success with a post-it note campaign advertising the Quitline. We ran the sticky note on the front Sunday page of seven major newspapers in the state and really upped call volume! Here is a sample of the note:
- Texas: The Texas Department of State Health Services has worked with EnviroMedia Social Marketing for its tobacco prevention and control advertising programs since 2000. This ad agency only works on public health, environmental and social issues. They have implemented pre-teen and teen prevention campaigns as well as cessation and secondhand smoke campaigns. They also developed collateral and messaging for our disparities efforts and worked with us to design a clinician’s toolkit for cessation counseling to be used in conjunction with our fax referral program. Their work has been very instrumental in our successes. For more information, please visit their website.
You will find many of our campaign materials posted on our Web sites:
- New York: Better World Advertising has done considerable work in Tobacco Control, provide excellent media campaigns and are great to work with. They are currently developing a social marketing campaign in New York State, targeting physicians to increase their attitude towards cessation treatment among their patients. Because we are still developing this campaign, I cannot provide any examples of developing concepts, but have been very impressed with their work so far. Here is their contact information and website where you can see a sampling of their work:

- New Jersey: The initial provider for the New Jersey campaign was BBD&O based in Minneapolis. They developed initial campaigns in a time of MSA funding and were very successful and retain this knowledge. They may be worth contacting. New Jersey is on the soon-to-be third vendor and it is a complicated situation where the RFP was for all Department of Health advertising and not only the tobacco part. [Note: BBDO stands for Batten, Barton, Durstine and Osborn. They have been taken over by Omnicon Group Inc., one of the world's largest advertising agencies. Their current NYC corporate office number is 212-415-3600. The branch that was highly specialized in tobacco was based in Minneapolis.]
- Vermont: Most of Vermont’s past campaigns can be previewed on the MCRC website. I can talk about the ones that they like, and provide samples of the collateral material that we sent out with each campaign. The ad agency that has worked with over the past five years is Kelliher, Samets and Volk, based in Burlington, VT.
