Materials on smoke-free outdoor air – 1/31/12
Q: Your help is needed to fill a gap in the CDC’s Media Campaign Resource Center (MCRC) for clean outdoor air ordinance media materials, advertisements, or resources – the specific request that came in is for anything that features a playground, beach, or other recreational area where kids (or adults) congregate. If you are aware of such a campaign, please reply with copies of the materials and/or any relevant information about them.
A:
- Alabama: In Alabama, we have a Young Lungs at Play Campaign we use to cover any outdoor recreational setting. After cities pass a policy, we provide the Young Lungs at Play signs. See attached for:
Rockland, NY is where we learned about the idea when the Steps to a HealthierAL grant existed. There may be more information on the website for Rockland, NY Steps. This funding opportunity allowed for us to swap resources over 5 years. We loved the Young Lungs at Play signs and created the policy pertaining to outdoor areas. We found that some municipalities had policies for indoor areas, but not for the outdoor areas and that we could get policies for outdoor areas passed fairly easy compared to more comprehensive policies.
- California: The Tobacco Education Clearinghouse of California (TECC) offers a variety of outreach materials that may be helpful. See links below:
- Colorado: We do have a new campaign to promote outdoor smoke-free policies titled “Partially protected, completely exposed” the campaign is designed to raise awareness that smoking bans in indoor areas only are not enough to fully protect people from secondhand smoke exposure. The campaign has images of a person with half of a bike helmet, half of a ski goggle, half of an umbrella to help illustrate the point that partial protection is really no protection at all.
- West Virginia: While we are addressing these areas in our ongoing CIAR efforts… We don’t have any specific media to share that deals with these areas.
Editor’s note: The Media Campaign Resource Center (MCRC) is a clearinghouse funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Office on Smoking and Health. The MCRC licenses and maintains an inventory of existing tobacco control advertisements developed by a number of U.S. states, organizations, and federal agencies. The MCRC is a one-stop resource for those interested in viewing or utilizing a variety of media materials from around the country. Visit the MCRC website to search for ads such as the ones mentioned above, or to learn how to submit your own campaign.
