Secondhand smoke exposure data from birth certificates – 7/6/12

Q: The State of South Dakota would like to ask other states to share examples of birth certificate questions used to determine exposure to secondhand smoke.

A:

  1. Kentucky: Attached is a PowerPoint slide from our epidemiologist that outlines Kentucky’s birth certificate question regarding smoking before and during pregnancy.
     
  2. Nebraska: The following is what Nebraska collects in our birth certificate questions. The information we collect can be found on birth certificates in any state that has adopted the 2003 US Standard Birth Certificate.

    How many cigarettes did you smoke on an average day during each of the following time period?
     
    If you NEVER smoked, enter zero for each time period.

  3. New Hampshire: Our vital statistics data is self-reported on smoking during each trimester. New Hampshire does not collect exposure data.
     
  4. West Virginia: The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) does ask smoking exposure questions:

    • No one allowed to smoke anywhere inside my home
    • Smoking is allowed in some rooms or at some times
    • Smoking is permitted anywhere inside my home
