Partnerships with Salvation
Army – 11/16/05
Q: Do you have any successful partnerships
and on-going interventions with the Salvation Army, especially
programs that have incorporated proven programs or interventions
for you prevention/cessation?
A:
- Nebraska: Salvation Army in Lincoln,
Nebraska has committed to incorporate tobacco prevention
activities and education daily into their after-school program.
A Tobacco Free Club meets once a week for elementary school
kids and has been very successful. The kids from one elementary
school close to the Salvation Army building has made their
own film about “What you doing after School? Smoke?
NO! as part of the Tobacco Free Club. The after-school program
has been extended until 7 p.m. and included in the activities
are booklets and activity sheets on tobacco prevention.
The Salvation Army has increased their programming for 8th
–12th graders and now includes programming until midnight.
Once a week they are dedicated to providing tobacco information
and activities. Currently they are developing Midnight basketball
which will be teams of tobacco free youth. Parents will
be encouraged to come watch their youth play and this program
will help families enjoy activities together rather than
being in the bars.
Information on second hand smoke and cessation have been
provided to the youth and parents throughout the year. Any
special activity that includes family, always has educational
information available. Cessation signup sheets have been
available at special occasions, with classes being offered
right at the Salvation Army building a couple of times during
the year.
Salvation Army has partnered with other agencies to provide
drug prevention activities including tobacco prevention
for the high school youth during Drug Free Youth Nights.
- Wisconsin: WI contracts with the Salvation
Army to be the coordinating agency for the WI Tobacco Prevention
and Poverty Network. Attached is an article that recently
appeared in the National Network on Tobacco Prevention and
Poverty Newsletter that describes efforts of the Network.
