Assessing local tobacco prevention and education resources – 8/28/09
Q: Nevada is planning to conduct a survey to assess existing tobacco prevention and education resources in the state in an effort to inventory all aspects of tobacco prevention; cessation, youth prevention, efforts to eliminate SHS, etc. The survey will target existing tobacco prevention partners and coalitions and will also serve as a gap analysis to determine which areas of the state are in need of services.
Have any other states created a tobacco control survey or relevant tool to capture this type of information that they could share?
A:
- Alabama - The Alabama program hasn't conducted something exactly like this, but we have completed Communities of Excellence in Tobacco Control which may get at the same info. Much more recently, we used the CHANGE tool (put out by Strategic Alliance-funded folks) to assess tobacco control activities in different community settings.
- Colorado - CDC might have something since their Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs document outlines this for each state.
I would also look to NACCHO, the National Association of County and City Health Officials. If they have not already released their Program and Funding Guidelines for Comprehensive Local Tobacco Control Programs, I am under the impression that they will soon. This document is based on CDC's recommendations. Perhaps they have some assessment tools.
Editor’s note: NACCHO developed the Program and Funding Guidelines for Comprehensive Local Tobacco Control Programs in 2000 based on the CDC's 1999 Best Practices Guide; content has not yet been updated to reflect the CDC's 2007 Best Practices guide.
- West Virginia - There hasn’t been any such survey here in WV.
- Wyoming - Wyoming does not have a survey or tool to assess local prevention and education resources. We would be VERY interested in learning what you learn. Would you be willing to share any resources that may come your way?
