Summary:
There are many reasons why members of the business community should join forces with public health advocates to pass and implement comprehensive smoke-free air laws. Unfortunately, fear of lost revenue, fueled by tobacco industry reports and pseudo-science, creates powerful opposition to smoke-free laws. Once the business community’s fears are overcome, and members of the business community join the ranks of smoke-free air supporters, passage of a strong law is much easier.  This webinar provides an overview of the benefits to the business community that result from comprehensive smoke-free air laws.  In addition, presentations on experiences in Washington State and Kentucky provide real world examples of how smoke-free air laws improve the economy statewide and in local communities.

Participants will be able to:

• Increase awareness of the costs to the business community caused by smoking, versus savings from smoke-free policies.
• Recognize sound research methodology used to measure economic impact of smoke-free laws that demonstrate smoke-free policies have no adverse impact on business.
• Demonstrate how Washington State’s smoke-free law increased tax revenue to state general funding.
• Determine advocacy strategies needed to deal with local opposition who claim economic loss from smoke-free laws, with special emphasis on rural communities.
