SUMMARY:Breaking the Hold: Addressing Racialized Trauma and Menthol Inequit
 ies
DESCRIPTION:This event is supported by the Centers for Disease Control an
d Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HH
 S) as part of a financial assistance award totaling $250\,000 with 100% fu
nded by CDC/HHS. The contents are those of the author(s) and do not necess
arily represent the official views of\, nor an endorsement by\, CDC/HHS or
the U.S. government."\n\nMenthol and the use of mentholated tobacco produ
cts can significantly contribute to an individual’s mental health challe
nges and cause concern to overall wellbeing such as increased stress and a
nxiety. Commercial tobacco\, and specifically menthol cigarettes\, have be
en historically marketed toward Black and African American communities\, r
esulting in higher menthol use in these communities. The gaps in policy an
d lack of accountability for predatorial practices create a hold on the co
mmunities’ capacity to create necessary\, sustainable changes to elimina
te the toll of tobacco. A history of racialized\, systemic trauma compound
s the challenges in individuals’ tobacco cessation and recovery journeys
.\n\nJoin the National Behavioral Health Network on Thursday\, June 20\, 3
-5 p.m. ET for a masterclass on understanding systemic\, racialized trauma
in relation to tobacco-related health disparities and applying intersecti
onal frameworks to address menthol inequities.\n\nBy attending this master
class\, participants will:\n\n• Increase their understanding of the syst
emic\, racialized lens to trauma and its impact.\n\n• Explore opportunit
ies and barriers to integrating trauma-informed and whole person approache
 s to addressing tobacco-related health disparities.\n\n• Strategize to r
educe the disproportionate impact of menthol on Black and African American
communities.\n\nThis Masterclass will feature the following speakers:\n\n
 • Terence Fitzgerald\, PhD\, EdM\, MSW\, Consultant\, National Council f
or Mental Wellbeing\n\n• Kimberly Caldwell\, MSPH\, Tobacco Program Mana
ger\, The Center for Black Health &amp\; Equity
